Bram Cohen

No. 24 Bram Cohen, BitTorrent creator

Last year's position: Not placed

The man credited for creating the BitTorrent file-sharing technology, Bram Cohen claims a spot on the Agenda Setters list for being a thorn in the side of the big media companies.

"He's got some incredibly clever technology and his disruptive approach is causing chaos," according to one panellist.

P2P file sharing may have first made headlines with Napster but it's the free BitTorrent which is now occupying significant portions of the traffic on the internet.

The technology, which is used for distributing large files such as movies, software and music, utilises a 'co-operative' approach that doesn't hog bandwidth - meaning anyone can share their creations. This cuts out the middlemen and levels the playing field in media distribution - a situation the established media giants are none too pleased about.

QUOTATION

"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
