No. 36 Jeffrey Citron, chairman and CEO, Vonage
Last year's position: Not placed
Long talked up as a threat to incumbent telcos, voice over IP is proving itself thanks to solid businesses such as Vonage. Under Jeffrey Citron's leadership, Vonage aims to bring low-cost VoIP service to the masses - eschewing the need for a PC, unlike the 'soft phones' from the likes of Google, Skype and Yahoo!.Vonage offers VoIP phone service to residences and small businesses in Canada, the US and, most recently, the UK, and is singled out by the Agenda Setters panel for being an innovative operation with legs, not just a passing fashion.
No stranger to shake-ups, Citron was formerly a pioneer in the financial services world. He founded the ground-breaking Island ECN computerised trading system and transitioned Datek into becoming an online brokerage.
Now he's bringing that paradigm-shifting energy to the telecoms arena. Look out.
Take a walk down memory lane - and find out who made the Agenda Setters poll over the years:
"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
