No. 40 Michael Dell, founder and chairman, Dell
Last year's position: 34
Like other billionaire heads of IT vendors, Michael Dell - despite the ongoing success of his eponymous business - is part of a disconcerting trend. His Agenda Setter positions over the past four years follow a pattern - from 5 to 12 to 34 to 40 this time. The alternative? For others, it's not appearing on the list at all, because of waning influence or being unseated.
There's little chance of Dell being ousted from the sleek computing empire he has created. As we said last year, Dell Inc has not only wiped the floor in PCs (though China is an increasing threat) but has done so in other IT hardware and soon, say some, areas of consumer electronics.
But, as we also said last time, our panel tends not to look at his eye for strategy - rather his distance from the office of the CEO.
Take a walk down memory lane - and find out who made the Agenda Setters poll over the years:
"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
