Chin Dae Je

No. 46 Chin Dae Je, Korean minister of information and communication

Last year's position: Not placed

With Korea emerging as one of the most advanced countries in the IT industry, the actions of Chin Dae Je will undoubtedly have a resounding impact on the people and economy there and abroad.

Chin has said it is his intention to make Korea the IT capital of the world, as a way to subsidise the agricultural economy.

He is the man behind a 10-year, $800m RFID government research project, and with high home broadband saturation levels (more than 80 per cent, according to Korean figures), he aims to make IT services in households a key part of the information economy.

Given Korea's policy of driving industry from government, Chin, who spent more than 15 years at electronics giant Samsung, is in the perfect place to push his country to the forefront of IT.

QUOTATION

"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
