Neelie Kroes

No. 50 Neelie Kroes, European commissioner for competition

Last year's position: Not placed

Neelie Kroes has been instrumental in the antitrust case that forced tech behemoth Microsoft to unbundle its Media Player application from the Windows operating system. Although the landmark judgement that saddled Microsoft with a record-breaking fine was passed down last year, the saga of Kroes and co vs Microsoft has yet to run its course.

As well as the symbolic de-fanging of the Microsoft beast, the Agenda Setters panel feels Kroes' work could have a profound effect on how the Redmond giant is run, and on end-users - with a completely 'unbundled' Microsoft potentially making interoperation between the various software packages more difficult.

Given that Microsoft has decided to challenge the ruling and sue the European Commission, Kroes' influence over Redmond and the tech world will be felt for some time to come.

QUOTATION

"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
