No. 5 Steve Jobs, CEO, Apple

Last year's position: 2

Why? 'Thinking different' about tech

Steve Jobs has been a regular fixture in the Agenda Setters top 10 for many years and, though down three spots from last year, shows no sign of turning in his gun and his badge any time soon.

He's been praised for turning Apple around, revolutionising computer hardware design and innovating when everyone else in tech was cutting costs.

This year the justification for Jobs' perennial presence is all about his foray into movie downloads. If Jobs can pull off what he did with iTunes and digital music in the film world, he'll more than merit his placing.

It's a testament to Jobs' clout that he's already had some success in getting movie studios - who have been traditionally sceptical about that whole 'interweb downloading thingy' - to commit their content.

The panel also praised Jobs' championing of simplicity. Over and above Apple's stripped-down hardware design, the CEO won plaudits for his mantra of 'it just works' - getting a product and its ecosystem to connect without hassle.

But Jobs' appearance goes beyond Apple. You can't help feeling that even if he left Cupertino, he'd still be turning heads - the true test of a real Agenda Setter.

In many ways he's become the personification of 'thinking different' about tech. As one panellist said so succinctly: "How can you not have him on the list?"
