No. 42 Pieter Geelen and Peter-Frans Pauwels, co-founders, TomTom

Last year's position: Not placed

Why? No more getting lost in strange cities

Pieter Geelen and Peter-Frans Pauwels debut on the Agenda Setters list for their pioneering work on the TomTom car navigation systems that finally settle all those map-reading arguments.

The Agenda Setters panel commended the Dutch founders for making navigation technology affordable - and changing the way people drive and the transport world as a whole.

Geelen and Pauwels both graduated from the University of Amsterdam in 1991 and started the company Palmtop to develop applications for the first generation of handheld computers.

But soon the founders realised navigation tools were what PDAs needed and so Palmtop morphed into the now successful TomTom, the top-selling sat-nav device maker this year, with more than 30 per cent market share.

Expect more game-changing ahead as TomTom moves into the business sector with a fleet-management system supporting GPS and GPRS.
