No. 37 Craig Newmark, founder and chairman, Craigslist

Last year's position: Not placed

Why? Teaching us how to build online communities

Few on the internet start out grassroots and stay there for long but Craigslist is one glaring exception.

Started in San Francisco by Craig Newmark as a community mailing list among friends in 1995, Craigslist has mushroomed in size to become a worldwide website for classifieds and discussion forums with more than 10 million users per day.

The Agenda Setters panel singled out Newmark, a software engineer with the "electronic frontier mentality", for refusing to sell out when one might guess the likes of eBay would pay a pretty penny to get their hands on Craigslist's secrets.

The site has also been influential in teaching us how to build online communities - not by coming up with new revenue streams but by focusing on what users want.

Still the man in charge of answering customer service requests, Newmark has indeed remained humble despite staggering success.
