No. 39 Gil Tene, CTO, Azul Systems
Last year's position: Not placed
Why? Jumpstarting processing power
There's a revolution going on in processing technology - and Gil Tene is at the heart of it.
The man in charge of the architectural vision and product design at Azul Systems, Tene oversees the development of technology that eschews the need for quibbling about operating systems and applications by running Java functions directly on the silicon chip.
With others argue over whether two-core or four-core is better, Azul has developed 24-core processors which feature built-in virtualisation plus lower acquisition and running costs than comparable technology. Big banks - as well as the likes of Cisco, IBM and Intel - are already showing interest in the approach.
Tene, a veteran of Nortel Networks, CheckPoint Software and the Israeli Navy, is on top of a technology whose impact will be felt in years to come.
