CIO Agenda 2009: Let's just say, the outlook is cloudy

While some experts are predicting cloud computing will have a greater impact than the PC revolution of the 1980s, IT chiefs expect it to be the most over-hyped technology this year, according to silicon.com's exclusive CIO research.
The excitement around cloud computing - accessing data and applications via the web - has been building in recent months, but when asked what will be the most over-hyped technology of 2009, the IT directors and CIOs that responded to the silicon.com CIO Agenda 2009 survey named cloud computing above any other technology.
Unsurprisingly then, less than one in 10 of the tech chiefs surveyed listed software-as-a-service or grid and utility computing as one of their technology priorities for this year.
Hype around Windows 7 was mentioned by several respondents, while other technologies the CIOs and IT directors expected the industry to get over-excited about include Google Apps in the enterprise.
When asked what they thought had been the most over-hyped technology of 2008, green was most mentioned.
The results are in keeping with last year's CIO Agenda, when CIOs predicted that green would be the most over-hyped technology in 2008.
This year's CIOs also cited the iPhone as over-hyped in 2008, with one respondent mentioning touchscreen phones for business in general as the biggest hype stating: "Most managers seem unable to take advantage of them and need a keyboard."
In 2007, Microsoft's Windows Vista topped the list of most over-hyped technologies by a clear distance - as it did the year before.
The silicon.com CIO Agenda, now in its fifth year, surveyed 25 CIOs and IT directors in the UK across a range of industries.
