The silicon.com CIO50 has now been revealed - and a quick comparison of this year's list with those from previous years throws up some interesting trends.
One is the enduring influence of a number of CIOs: this year's silicon.com CIO50 includes 11 impressive CIOs who have featured in all three of the lists since the CIO50 was first published in 2007.
This year's CIO50 also features another 15 that have made the list in either 2007 or 2008 - showing that there are heads of IT that know how to deliver year after year.
There are also 24 new entries on this year's list, however, reflecting how vibrant and fast changing an environment these CIOs are operating in, with new stars coming through all the time.
On this year's list we also have eight female CIOs - including this year's top CIO. While that's one down on last year's nine, it's still well above the 15 per cent figure of women in IT in general - and still above the number of five female CIOs who made the list in 2007.
Other changes to the list appear to have been affected by the current economic conditions: 16 of the CIOs this year represent the public sector - up from nine last year. Retailers too have had a good year, with CIOs from the likes of Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury's making the list.
Meanwhile, the number of CIOs from the financial sector has dropped, down slightly from last year's 10 to this year's eight.
