Every year the silicon.com CIO50 celebrates the best CIO talent in the UK. As well as recognising these executives for excelling in the day job and showcasing their talents, the profiles we compile as part of the special report give us a chance to take a peek behind the scenes and find out a little more about these technology chiefs.

As they are every year, the 2009 silicon.com CIO50 is an eclectic bunch with a wide range of interests.

Firstly, they're a pretty sporty lot. This year's favourite sport seems to be cycling - although we also have a fan of two-wheeled entertainment in the form of motorbiking too. One of our cycling CIOs has even cycled 1,000 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats, and is now looking for a new challenge - which might be either cycling around Australia or across the US.

We have at least a couple of sailors, a climber and one CIO who lists their hobbies as marathon running and skydiving, although probably not at the same time.

The CIO50 also includes a kendo enthusiast (and a Six Sigma Black Belt).

CIOs are of course well known for taking the helicopter view but a couple have taken that a bit further, and listed flying as one of their hobbies. In fact one CIO - who could probably qualify as an action hero - lists piloting light aircraft, cycling and diving as their interests.

A couple of CIOs have been brave enough to list which football club they support, and as such the silicon.com CIO50 2009 list is happy to welcome an associate director of Lincoln City Football Club and a keen Leyton Orient fan.

Other hobbies and interests that CIOs have mentioned this year include guitar collections, Roman military history, world music, woodworking, golf and swimming.

Many of course are also involved with industry associations such as the British Computer Society, Socitm and the government CIO council - as well as silicon.com's very own CIO Jury, of course.

In terms of education, the CIO50 isn't just composed of computer science graduates, although unsurprisingly there are a few of them.

Other degrees held by CIOs include MBAs, but also degrees in Business Administration, European Politics, Economics and Languages, Econometrics, mechanical engineering, mathematics and English Literature.
