Every year, the silicon.com CIO50 gathers the opinions of the UK's top CIOs to create the definitive list of the country's most influential heads of IT.

CIOs are asked to vote for their peers anonymously on the basis of their performance during the last year, taking into account their leadership ability, delivery and execution record, innovation and influence.

This year, the list was shaped using the ballots of nearly three dozen of the UK's most prominent IT chiefs, including CIOs and IT executives who have featured in the list in previous years, as well as votes from members of silicon.com's CIO Jury community.

The CIOs who voted this year include executives from some of the largest organisations in the UK, from retail and financial services companies through to central and local government bodies.

In addition to the votes of CIOs, a number of experts were also polled, including silicon.com editor Steve Ranger; Julian Goldsmith, deputy editor of BNET UK; Cathy Holley and Vicky Maxwell Davies, partners at Boyden Global Executive Search; Brinley Platts, chairman, CIOdevelopment.com; and Tim Cook, executive director at executive recruitment company Russell Reynolds Associates.
