I've spent the last month or so in conversation with other editors, academics, CIOs, entrepreneurs and lawyers around the world about where tech innovation is coming from - and where it will come from in the future.

It's been fascinating for me to catch up with the experts from across the world who have let us know about the innovation happening in their backyard that we would never have heard of otherwise.

Tech Hotspots: The list

1. Silicon Valley
2. Bangalore
3. London
4. Tokyo
5. Boston
6. Cambridge
7. Shanghai
8. Tel Aviv
9. Seoul
10.Beijing
11.Chennai
12.Pune
13.Singapore
14.Helsinki
15.Moscow
16.Hong Kong
17.Hyderabad
18.New York
19.Sydney
20.Shenzhen

The whole exercise has underlined just how global the technology industry is now and how wide companies have to throw the net to make sure they really are getting hold of the latest advances. And now we've poured all that wisdom into the Tech Hotspots special report which you can see here.

Check out the interactive map which I think is great fun, and then read the profiles of each of the hotspots, as written by the silicon.com editorial team using their personal experience of most of the locations listed. Add your own comments or vote cities up or down depending on your own experience of them.

I'm pleased - if to be honest a little surprised - that London made it so far up the list. Despite talk of a skills drain it seems the rest of the world still sees London as a centre of excellence.

But this is no time for any city to be resting on its laurels. While Silicon Valley may be in first place this year, it's also a reflection of how the technology world is evolving that China and India both have four cities on the list each.

Few would bet against them further improving their position in next year's list - the more interesting question maybe, is which countries will lose out as a result...
