What's so special about New York?
New York has long been a centre in the global economy so it makes sense that it's also a significant place for technology innovation and development.

The city and surrounding area - including New Jersey - has a high concentration of research labs, while a significant number of tech companies have offices there as well.

The region has around 300,000 tech workers - a significant pool of talent that companies can take advantage of. And, as Tech Hotspots judge Peter Cochrane commented, New York has some interesting business and financial models. This all adds up to the Big Apple being a popular place to do business and try out new things.

And as a centre for world business and media, New York is an ideal base from which to run international operations and take advantage of marketing and advertising opportunities.

The city is also home to numerous sources of investment - from venture capitalists and established tech companies - meaning it's a place where start-ups can really receive a boost.

Most big tech players have a presence in the city including Intel, Microsoft and Google. And IBM has its world headquarters in Armonk, New York state, bucking the trend set by most tech giants of basing themselves in Silicon Valley.
