Travellers using York railway station can now enjoy free wi-fi while they wait for their train.
Station manager and train operator National Express East Coast has introduced free wireless internet across most of the station, which is used by more than 10 million rail passengers per year.
Areas covered are the main concourse, with its waiting areas and cafés, and platforms one to five - which includes the station's main northbound and southbound platforms. Passengers can access the service by logging onto the network 'nxecwifi_YORK'. Platforms six to 11 are not covered at present.
Steve Soards, station manager for National Express East Coast at York, said one of the major advantages of choosing the train over alternative transport methods such as driving or flying is the ability to stay connected while travelling.
He said in a statement: "For business passengers our wi-fi creates a productive mobile office, with the ability to send and receive emails as well as to access the internet. Staying online throughout a journey can mean the difference between clinching a deal or losing out."
The train operator introduced free wi-fi for all classes of passengers on the London to Scotland east coast mainline last year when it took over the franchise and has since seen usage increase four-fold.
