British Airways has launched an app for the 3G iPhone aimed at frequent flyers.

The app enables customers to view the BA timetable, get real-time travel arrival and departure info and book flights - all on their Apple gadget.

Customers can also save 'favourite flights' in order to easily keep updated on their progress, said BA, which claims to be the first airline to introduce an iPhone application.

Paul Coby, CIO British Airways, BA said in a statement: "The iPhone is revolutionising mobile communications and allows us to provide instant access to arrivals and departures information which will enhance the experience of travelling with BA."

He added: "We're always seeking to improve the service our customers enjoy by the smart use of innovative technology and the iPhone is a fantastic way to achieve this."

BA said the app is available to download for free from Apple's app store via iTunes, along with hundreds of other third-party iPhone apps - from productivity tools to games and social networking apps.

Other companies announcing 3G iPhone apps today include software as a service company Salesforce.com, and low cost international call provider Truphone.
