Five of the best digital distractions...

With a nod to keeping in touch with the outside world without going the whole hog and taking your BlackBerry to the beach, consider packing a netbook in your suitcase - such as the Eee PC 900 (pictured) which weighs in at just under 1kg so won't burden your luggage allowance too much.
If there are any wi-fi hotspots in the locality you can use it for a spot of surfing, email checking and - for those also packing a headset - VoIP-based phoning home. Or upload your digital holiday pics and make friends back home jealous. You can even pre-load it with media prior to jetting off and use it for tuning out in the evenings - the Linux version comes with 20GB of SSD storage.
