Electronic tags for cars as congestion charge spreads out

TfL has plans to augment the Congestion Charge scheme with electronic tags in cars - coupled with gantries to detect them, covering congestion hotspots across London - to monitor vehicle movements and levy a range of charges based on vehicle type, road used and time of day, according to The Times. If trials go well, car-tagging will be introduced in the capital in 2009.
