The IT teams also had to address potential technologies that may become important during the life of T5. Gaines said: "One of the challenges is safeguarding for future technologies."
To avoid the risk of building obsolete systems, the project has employed a 'last responsible moment' approach to make sure IT decisions take into account all possible technologies before being made.
BA's Coby said: "T5 encapsulates how a 21st century information management department plays a part in the business. We've used it as a catalyst for business operations."
BA has ambitious IT targets for the running of the terminal as well, aiming for 100 per cent e-ticketing and 80 per cent self service check in (currently 58 per cent).
