Despite the rise and rise of online shopping, high street retail in the UK and US is far from dead.

An IBM survey of 4,300 US and 1,142 UK shoppers found three-quarters browse online and then go out and purchase in the store.
There appears to be no gender difference in the amount of shoppers that favour such multi-channel shopping, with consumer electronics, followed by DIY, and clothing the most popular multi-channel purchases.
US consumers spent the most when browsing on the web and then contacting a call centre, while for UK consumers the largest basket size was achieved when browsing online and then purchasing using a mobile phone, the survey claims.
Researchers at IBM forecast nearly 40 per cent of retail sales will be influenced by the web in some way by 2012 and that cross-channel shopping will bring in 20 per cent of total revenues by that time.
