The retailer reported a rise in total sales of 7.6 per cent to over £10bn for the 26 weeks ending 4 October.

However the retailer said online home delivery sales grew in the same period by 30 per cent to an "annualised business" of £500m.

The delivery service currently covers around 87 per cent of the UK population but the retailer is planning to expand it to cover an additional 18 stores across the country, bringing the service to a total of 165 stores.

The company also restated its intention to launch a non-food online business in the next two years, a move it announced in May this year.

In a statement, the company said: "Good progress is being made in the development of this new service which will provide customers with the choice of a range of Sainsbury's own-brand and branded non-food products."
