The managed IP virtual private network running on a multi-service platform will connect stores, petrol stations, distribution centres and datacentres with the retailer's headquarters.

The service will carry voice, video and data and can also be used to support IPCCTV and fixed/mobile convergence.

In a statement, Morrisons IT director Gary Barr said: "Morrisons needs proven, world-class systems to achieve our business requirements for profitable growth today and in the future. We see investing in our network as an essential part of our growth plans which over time delivers dividends."

Both supplier and retailer refused to discuss the value of the deal, although it is thought to be over £10m.

Installation of the network began this year and will be completed in April 2009.

The deal is the latest in a string of managed voice and data contracts for C&W, including agreements with Aviva, Centrica, Thames Water and Tesco.
