U is for UMTS

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), also called W-CDMA, is one of the 3G mobile standards jockeying for position in Europe.

First introduced into the UK by 3 in 2003, it is sometimes called 3GSM as it is a 3G tech designed to replace GSM. UMTS has the potential to support 11Mbps data transfer rates and can be used for things like mobile videoconferencing.

However, UMTS could well soon be outmoded with networks being upgraded to the faster and HSDPA (3.5G) in many countries.
