V is for Virgin

Virgin Group companies are at the centre of several interesting wireless developments.

Virgin Mobile is the only major mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in the UK. This means that the company doesn't have its own base stations but buys its airtime off another company (T-Mobile) and resells it under the Virgin brand.

Virgin Mobile was recently bought by NTL:Telewest, as part of its plans to create a company that can provide broadband, TV, fixed phone lines and mobile phone services. The company will soon be re-branded as Virgin Media to take advantage of the Virgin cachet.

Virgin Trains recently started to roll out wi-fi in all of their west-coast trains. The impact of wi-fi can have on train operators is clear. According to GNER, the first UK operator to offer wi-fi on all of its trains, 22 per cent of journeys that have moved from air to rail were influenced by wi-fi availability.

Virgin Mobile was also recently the first to launch a mobile TV service in the UK with other mobile networks now following suit.
