W is for WiMax

WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a broadband wireless standard being touted as the next big thing.

The key advantage of WiMax is that it can be used over much greater distances than standard wi-fi. This 'super- powered wi-fi' can work over distances of many miles rather than just within the same building.

Broadband suppliers also seem keen as it reduces the need to lay cable to hook up remote areas. Indeed, WiMax is seen by some as having the potential to make the UK 100 per cent broadband-enabled.

Milton Keynes will be the venue for the first commercial WiMax trial, with Pipex due to roll out the tech there by the end of 2006. The town has been chosen due to its less-than-great broadband coverage and sprawling geography, which seem ideal to test the technology's potential.
