NEWS Amdahl has challenged IBM's leadership claims in the mainframe market with the announcement of its latest Millennium 800 series. While IBM's System 390 G5 can only offer up to ten linked processors providing up to 685Mips, Amdahl claims it will be able to offer 12 processors and 990Mips. The Millennium 800 will replace the current 700 series and 125Mips as a standard processor. Susan Middleton, analyst at IDC, said Amdahl needs to keep up or stay ahead of the competition as it only holds a 10 per cent market share, compared to IBM's 67 per cent.
