Web technology pays, but chaos looms

NEWS Companies can get returns of up to four times their original investment by deploying Internet commerce, intranet and extranet applications, according to an IDC report. The research was conducted in conjunction with The Open Group, a vendor-neutral consortium of more than 200 members with combined information technology budgets of more than $55bn (£34bn) annually. Simon Lofthouse, European corporate communications manager at The Open Group, said that in spite of the rewards, "there is a problem getting all these different technologies to work together. If not, this will lead to chaos over the Web." As usual, one of the more important areas for concern is security. "If a standard can be set, we would get over the problems of Internet-centric roadblocks. Otherwise, confusion in the user-market will hold back Web development", said Lofthhouse.
