Users warned to stay away from Windows 98

NEWS PC customers are being advised to hold back from upgrading to Windows 98 until device driver updates or basic input/output system (Bios) updates are available. Anne Powell, research director at DataPro, explained: "Mass migration to a new operating system should never have gone ahead without complete testing being done. Users should always be cautious before such a big change." Terry Ernest-Jones, senior consultant at IDC, commented that large software innovations need time to settle so teething problems can be dealt with. He said: "As operating systems grow in size, problems become more and complex, thus becoming harder to create a finished product." Pressure to upgrade will bring increased complexity, explained Ernest-Jones, adding that with delays expected for Windows NT, "they may have foreseen problems and extended the test period".
