In brief: Netscape jumps on Linux bandwagon

By Polly Raymond, 22 July 1998 12:02

NEWS Netscape has joined the growing number of vendors to announce support for Linux - an open-source operating system alternative to NT and Unix. The Internet software company will start developing versions of its Messaging and Directory Server products to Linux. Netscape considers Linux to be a popular operating system particularly in the enterprise and Internet service provider market. Database vendors Informix and Oracle also made their own commitment to the operating system this week. Netscape officials added that its move reflects recent developer demand for a low-cost, open standards alternative to Windows NT.
