Microsoft drags NT into the new millennium

NEWS Microsoft, in an attempt to launch its Windows NT into the new millennium, is said to be considering a new name for the operating system and bringing its next release date forward. In place of the New Technology (NT) label, Microsoft are considering re-labelling the product Windows Professional, or Pro, and Windows 2000. The prospect of an early release of NT 5.0 has had a mixed reaction from the industry, with some analysts worried that Microsoft's impatience could lead to a less than stable product. Despite Microsoft claiming NT 5.0 Beta 2 - which was released in August - 'feature complete', Michael Gartenberg, analyst at the Gartner Group, insists NT 5.0 will not be ready until 2000.
