NEWS Compaq has been accused of offering inferior products and poor volume discount deals in the latest survey from Technology Business Research (TBR). TBR spoke to IT managers from 278 Fortune 1000 companies, and found that many were unimpressed with Compaq's performance - particularly when it came to notebooks. Julie Perron, manager of primary research at TBR, said: "A high percentage of people we spoke to said Compaq notebooks have a lifetime of one to two years maximum - they are definitely below par in price/performance." She added: "Competitively, compared to Dell and IBM, Compaq is behind." However, despite heavy criticism from some individuals, overall satisfaction with Compaq notebooks grew by 10.3 per cent during the third quarter of the year. But Perron said this isn't a big enough gain for the company to compete with Dell and IBM. Dell came top in all three categories in the survey - notebooks, desktops and servers - and won praise from TBR. Perron said Dell is ahead in volume discounting for large corporations, adding: "To catch them [Dell], companies such as HP, IBM and Toshiba need to almost copy the Dell business plan or create a hybrid version somewhere between the two." Compaq was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
