West Midlands Police nabs Amdahl for accounts system

NEWS Amdahl Global Solutions has won a contract to supply West Midlands Police Authority with a new financial system, replacing a non millennium bug compliant predecessor. It is based on Oracle financial software running on Sun Solaris servers. It will be used by 200 people in the accounts department and managers at 21 remote locations. Derek Smith, director of finance at West Midlands Police Authority, said: "We needed to replace an ICL mainframe which was not Year 2000 or euro compliant. We are moving to a client server network because of the industry perception that that is a better way to go." Smith added that end users would see improvements and a more user friendly service. He also said the system fitted better with the Police Authority IT strategy - to deliver a range of applications for police operations and support over a distributed network without an army of IT staff. Amdahl was unavailable for comment.
