NEWS Windows NT has not supplanted Unix and Netware, according to IDC. The research company claims Microsoft's operating system is not used as a major enterprise server running mission critical applications. Instead it is primarily used as a departmental infrastructure server for file and print functions, messaging and communications. The report claims Novell's Netware is mainly used for similar functions, but its users claim Netware's strength and reliability mean they have not adopted Windows NT. According to IDC's research, Unix is most often used for transaction processing, database support, and support for custom commercial and technical applications.
