NEWS Microsoft chief financial officer, Greg Maffei, has claimed the PC market is "fundamentally healthy" despite reports to the contrary from computer manufacturers. The claim came as he announced the company's results for the third quarter. The software giant enjoyed a 40 per cent jump in profits despite the problems suffered by many of its largest desktop partners, like Compaq. Turnover was up 15 per cent to $4.33bn and profit was up to $1.92bn for the third quarter ended 31 March. But Maffei remained cautious on future growth saying in a statement "we remain guarded about growth in 1999, given the likelihood that organisations will lock down their systems infrastructures due to Year 2000 concerns".
