NEWS IBM is to ship its 'G6' mainframe computer from 28 May - a month ahead of schedule. The machine, officially called the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server - Sixth Generation, is capable of 1.6 million instructions per second. Its early release gives Big Blue a few months grace before rival, Hitachi Data Systems brings out its machine in September.
