SGI opens file system to Linux

By Sarah Left, 21 May 1999 18:03

NEWS Server and supercomputer firm, SGI, has offered its journaled file system, XFS, to the Linux community under open source guidelines. No Linux operating system (OS) to date has the feature and now open source developers will look the source code over and decide if it is suitable to become a permanent part of the OS. SGI says the adoption of its file system will push Linux forward as a platform for enterprise-class applications. Journaling is designed to handle files of up to nine million terabytes and to speed recovery in the event of a system failure.
