Microsoft president says 'knowledge is power'

NEWS Microsoft president, Steve Ballmer, has put flesh on the bones of Bill Gates' digital nervous system. Speaking in London, Ballmer said knowledge management is the key to success, as he revealed a raft of initiatives to help organisations manage their information. "The vision's got to be to let knowledge workers work without limits. It is my view that everybody in every company has something to contribute from their brain," he said. Ballmer announced that the forthcoming release of Microsoft Exchange Server will enable users to access all text-based information in a single format. Codenamed Platinum, the product will include a Web store, where text-based files such as Word files, email and Web pages will be stored in a common architecture. Ballmer said: "Today, we need different tools to access different information, but why should email searches be any different from the way you find files or Internet pages? We are trying to unify these searches with our Platinum technology." However, Microsoft is offering little in the way of customer service to support the initiatives. Ballmer acknowledged this, claiming: "We don't think we are serving the knowledge worker with what we offer now, but we intend to improve this."
