NEWS Application server technology will be a key factor in next-generation business IT, according to a report by analyst house, Ovum. The report predicts that by 2004, the market for the technology will be worth nearly $17bn. The report suggests that application server technology will be used in three different roles: the 'Webification' of existing applications, Web development for business functionality and in the creation of centralised integration hubs. Gary Barnett, co-author of the report, warned that though the benefits of application servers are evident, integration of the systems is highly complex and "not to be taken lightly". He added that some questions remain over portability.
