Ballmer gives thumbs up to application servers

NEWS The move to application servers - which allow users to rent application software minute by minute rather than buying it outright - got a surprising fillip from Microsoft last week. Steve Ballmer, Microsoft president, has gone on the record as saying he expects to see a move to such a business model in the near future. But he admitted Microsoft has not decided what its strategy would be. Ballmer claimed that as more people receive broadband Net access and use the "rental software", the sale of packaged applications will eventually disappear.
