NEWS StorageTek has signed an agreement to provide network operator Level 3 Communications with remote storage capabilities. StorageTek's Storage Utility package will be mainstay of the project, which is estimated to be worth in excess of $400m over the next two to three years. The deal will enable Level 3 Communications to offer storage facilities - such as backup storage and eventually document management and image archiving - to its customers. Level 3 is currently building an international IP-based fibre network for ISPs and Web-hosting companies. StorageTek will offer the service on a pay-as-you-go basis, designed for smaller Internet companies who can't afford to make large initial storage purchases. As part of the deal, StorageTek will implement Storage Utility in Level 3's London Gateway early in the New Year. StorageTek predicts that the growth in the ebusiness market will allow it to invest a further $100m in its Storage Utility initiatives in the next five years.
