NEWS New research from IDC shows Dell surging ahead of rival Compaq in US PC sales. With sales for all PC makers rising rapidly, the figures give Dell a 17.1 per cent market share compared to Compaq's 15.3 per cent. This is the first quarter that Dell has managed to beat Compaq for market share in the US market. Dell shipped over 50 per cent more computers in this year's third quarter than in the equivalent period last year. Sales for Compaq also rose 25 per cent, but its market share remained static. The figures have quashed fears that millennium bug worries would halt PC growth. Third quarter figures for the European market also show similar growth, with the market growing 19.3 per cent on the previous year. The figures, by research company Context, also show Compaq winning back the top spot from Dell in the UK with 18.8 per cent of the market. In the second quarter, Compaq lost the number one sales position to Dell for the first time in the UK.
