NEWS Graham Hopper, UK managing director of Packard Bell NEC, has put distance between the European and US arms of the PC manufacturer following yesterday's announcement of mass redundancies at the struggling American division. Speaking exclusively to Silicon.com, Hopper said: "Without being glib there is no connection between us and the US except for the name - we don't report back to the US." Following the restructuring six months ago it was uncertain whether the European division of the company would float with the US arm; Hopper said it was always more likely it would float separately. He also claimed the company was looking forward to strong sales this Christmas. "All the signs over the last six weeks have been very encouraging. People have been so bombarded with information about the Internet that is what is driving sales forward," he said.
