Dell remains second in global PC server market

NEWS Dell has retained its world number two position for PC server sales, according to an IDC report. The report, which also confirms Compaq as the worldwide number one supplier of PC servers, shows Dell's market share gaining 4 per cent on last year, to reach 15.4 per cent of the whole market. In the UK, Dell performed even better, taking over a fifth of the market. However it still has a long way to go to eclipse Compaq, which still accounts for just under half of all PC server sales in Britain. Dell claims to have built the market share from nothing in 1996, when it introduced its PowerEdge range of servers. Mark Wheeler, Dell's UK enterprise marketing manager, said: "We aim to translate the same success we have had in the UK PC market - where we are already number one - into the PC Server market".
