NEWS Microsoft says the development of Windows 2000 code is complete, and the company has released Windows 2000 Professional, Server and Advanced Server editions to manufacturing. According to Jim Allchin, Microsoft group vice-president of the Platforms Division, the operating system is the most widely tested product in the history of Windows. "We promised we wouldn't ship Windows 2000 until our customers said it was ready," Allchin commented. The company claims Windows 2000 has been beta-tested by 750,000 users, and that those who migrate will see significant benefits in speed and robustness over Windows 95, 98 and NT4. A retail release is promised by 17 February 2000.
