NEWS The BMW Williams Formula One motor racing team is set to base its entire operations on Compaq systems as part of a five year marketing and sponsorship deal. Compaq replaces tobacco company Winfield as the team's main sponsor. The PC and server giant will provide the team with high-end systems, including Unix and Alpha servers, as well as wireless devices for use during racing for real-time analysis and decision making. Jim Wright, head of marketing at Williams, said: "You would expect that a sponsorship of this nature would be significant - it is. But it's significant not only in terms of monetary union, but also in terms in the future direction of our team. Every Formula One team uses an enormous amount of computing power." Gabriele Zedlmayer, VP marketing communications for Compaq EMEA, added: "With so much information being collated, IT and F1 are the perfect match. IT has become an integral part of the sport and I won't be surprised if we set a trend." During a year of racing all round the globe, an estimated 50 billion people will be exposed to the Compaq logo on the cars and the drivers.
