NEWS IBM has released its first supercomputer powered by copper chip technology. The copper-based Power3-II processor is a RISC chip developed for IBM's RS/6000 servers and workstations, and the PC giant claims the system is twice as fast as comparable units from Sun Microsystems and SGI/Cray. With pricing starting from $46,800, the RS/6000 SP is targeted at the scientific and technical application market to simulate complex problems, such as a nuclear explosions or the workings of the human brain.
