NEWS Ed Zander, chief operating officer (COO) of Sun Microsystems today made a commitment to move aggressively into the storage market with a dramatic increase in storage offerings over the coming year. Zander laid out his vision for the company's future at a conference in London. He insisted Sun, will establish itself "as a major player in that area", and reaffirmed his company's commitment to develop products for three core goals: scalability, durability, and more closely integrated hardware and software. "With the advent of networked mobile devices - from phones, to cars and household appliances - the growth in traffic over the Internet will be unimaginable, incomprehensible. Today's science just won't be able to deal with that," Zander said, explaining the company's focus on scalability. Sun will also release new microprocessor products this year, with UltraSPARC III due out and a new chip, dubbed "magic", to be aimed at the multimedia space. Zander predicted 2000 will be Sun's highest growth year out of the last decade, as more and more people and companies across the world come online.
