NEWS This is how the original story broke on 25 April, 1999: America Online is planning to cut up to 1,000 jobs as Netscape is integrated into its business structure. In a statement, the company said it would reorganise the business into four product groups: the Interactive Services Group, the Interactive Properties Group, the Netscape Enterprise Group and the AOL International Group. Netscape-branded operations will remain based in Mountain View, California but AOL admitted the restructuring will mean the loss of up to 1,000 jobs - 500 at Netscape and 500 from its other operations. AOL chairman and CEO, Steve Case, claimed the deal will help his company reach the business market. In a statement, he said: "This acquisition will greatly accelerate our business momentum by advancing our multiple-brand, multiple-product strategy." The company said it will take a charge in its third quarter 1999 to cover the reorganisation costs. In a separate announcement AOL and Sun Microsystems named Sun executive, Mark Tolliver as president and general manager of their ecommerce alliance.
