NEWS IBM today increased its commitment towards open source software, announcing a $200m, four-year investment to ramp up its Linux initiatives in Europe. The funding will go towards development centres for the open source operating system, alliances with new business partners and 600 specialist Linux consultants for its European customers. France, Germany, Hungary, Poland and the UK will receive development centres, providing Linux-ready servers, storage systems and middleware, including Websphere, Lotus Domino and DB2. According to Mike Lawrie, general manager of IBM EMEA, there is a tremendous demand for Linux-ready applications in Europe and the $200m investment will speed up IBM's ability to get Linux-ready servers into the marketplace in the second half of the year. IBM will work with Linux specialist SuSE.
